Introduction
The RII60520 Advanced Diploma of Civil Construction Design reflects the role of a senior civil works designer or a paraprofessional who supports professional engineers. You will develop the skills to manage the design of complex civil projects, apply theoretical and technical knowledge, and initiate solutions to technical and management problems.
- This course is the second part of ATCWA’s packaged pathway. You complete the RII50520 Diploma of Civil Construction Design first, then continue into this Advanced Diploma, building skills directly on what you learned in the Diploma.
Course Duration
39 weeks, including 36 weeks of delivery and 3 weeks of holidays and term breaks.
Delivery
- Mode: face-to-face classroom training with supervised self-paced learning.
- Weekly schedule: 2 days of face-to-face in-class training and 5 hours of supervised self-paced learning.
Locations
- Perth Campus, 8 Francis Street, Perth WA 6000;
- Sydney Campus, 47 Rickard Road, Bankstown NSW 2200
ATCWA delivers all training and assessment directly. No third-party arrangements apply.
Entry Requirements
- Successful completion of the RII50520 Diploma of Civil Construction Design at ATCWA as part of the packaged pathway course.
English Language Requirements (Apply only to International Students)
International students applying for a student visa must meet the Department of Home Affairs English language requirements. Accepted tests include:
- IELTS (Academic or General Training): average band score of 6.0
- PTE Academic: overall score of 47
- TOEFL iBT: total score of 67
- Cambridge English C1 Advanced: overall score of 161
If you cannot provide one of these test results, ATCWA requires one of the following before issuing a Confirmation of Enrolment. Please note that these are ATCWA’s admission requirements and do not replace Home Affairs visa requirements.
- An ACSF Level 3 outcome in ATCWA’s English test;
- Evidence that English was the medium of instruction at your school for the last two years, with a satisfactory grade in English; or
- Evidence that you are currently studying in Australia and have studied for 6 months or more at AQF Certificate IV level or above.
Training & Assessment Methods
- Face-to-face discussions, learning activities and skills observation in class
- Practical tasks in class
- Industry-based projects and assessments
- Portfolio evidence
- Simulated work-based learning and assessment
- Written assessments, including projects and knowledge questions
- Structured and guided learning activities
- Industry excursions and incursions
Vocational Outcomes
The Advanced Diploma of Civil Construction Design builds on established civil design foundations and develops higher-level capability in complex design, technical verification, project and program coordination, safe design, risk, quality and management of civil works design processes. Students integrate engineering information with project requirements and develop the professional judgement needed to contribute effectively to multidisciplinary civil engineering design and delivery environments.
Possible employment outcomes
Graduates of the packaged pathway (the RII50520 Diploma followed by this Advanced Diploma) may seek employment in roles such as Civil Engineering Draftsperson and Civil Engineering Technician. Actual job titles and responsibilities depend on the duties of the position, employer requirements, individual experience and the scope of work undertaken. Completion of this qualification does not guarantee employment or a particular job role.
VO1 – Advanced Engineering Analysis and Integrated Technical Judgement
Graduates will be able to integrate prior mathematical, structural, spatial and civil design knowledge with advanced discipline-specific information to address more complex civil engineering design problems. They will interpret technical and site data, establish design criteria, evaluate constraints, undertake or review calculations and exercise reasoned technical judgement when selecting, checking and refining design solutions. The emphasis is on defensible engineering decision-making supported by appropriate evidence and documentation.
VO2 – Complex Civil Design Development and Verification
Graduates will be able to develop and check detailed civil design solutions in advanced contexts including civil steel structures, civil concrete structures, urban roads and geotechnical design. They will be able to move from project requirements and technical inputs through design development, checking, documentation and review, while considering constructability and implementation requirements. Graduates will be expected to explain the basis of their design decisions and demonstrate how proposed solutions respond to engineering specifications and project constraints.
VO3 – Digital Design Coordination and Civil Works Design Process Management
Graduates will be able to coordinate technical information, drawings, models, design inputs, reviews and controlled design documentation across the civil works design lifecycle. Building on the digital capabilities developed earlier in the pathway, they will be able to support multidisciplinary coordination and manage the progression of a civil design from requirements and concepts through development, checking, approval, implementation support and final review. RIICWD601E Manage civil works design processes provides the principal integrative capstone for this outcome.
VO4 – Project, Program and Commercial Coordination
Graduates will be able to contribute to the planning and control of civil design and project activities through management of scope, procurement, resources, business requirements, schedules and program-level risks. They will understand the relationship between engineering decisions and project delivery considerations such as time, cost, procurement, stakeholder requirements and change. This outcome prepares graduates to operate effectively within project and design teams where technical work must be coordinated with broader delivery objectives.
VO5 – Safe Design, Risk, Quality and Continuous Assurance
Graduates will be able to embed safe-design principles, systematic risk management and quality assurance into civil engineering design and delivery activities. They will identify hazards and project risks, evaluate controls, establish or work within quality systems, monitor compliance and support design verification and continuous improvement. The outcome emphasises that technically acceptable design must also be safe, controlled, traceable and capable of being implemented within defined project and organisational requirements.
VO6 – Professional Leadership, Collaboration and Graduate Practice
Graduates will be able to communicate with clients, engineers, designers, project personnel and other stakeholders; contribute to effective teams; exercise professional responsibility; and progressively coordinate or lead civil design activities within the boundaries of their competence.
